Triathlon is a multisport activity that comprises of running, swimming and cycling all in a single event.

History of Triathlon in NZ
The first-ever recorded triathlon event in New Zealand was in January 1978 in Mission Bay, Auckland. The event featured a 500-yard swim, 5-mile cycle, and a 6-mile run. The first Triathlon body in NZ was formed in September 1984, it was named ‘The New Zealand Triathlon Association (TNZTA). In 1985, the Multisport Association of New Zealand (MANZ) was established and was merged with TNZTA in 1988.
In 1989, Rick Wells, a New Zealander came third in a World Championship Triathlon event held in Avignon, France; he also came second in another event held in 1991. In a series of Triathlon events hosted in 1987, he won unofficial world short and long course title.
Erin Baker was another triathlete who was a talented distance runner and top-flight swimmer; she was regarded as the greatest female triathlete in the history of New Zealand. Internationally, she was the first woman ever to finish an ironman triathlon in less than 10 hours which led to her winning the first world triathlon tile. Records have it that she won in over 100 triathlon events in 1984 and 2013, she was the only multi- sportsperson in the Sports Hall of Fame in New Zealand.
