
Technical Official Pathway
NZ Level 1
A NZ Level 1 Official will have basic knowledge of the Tri NZ Competition Rules and their application, with an understanding of the background to the rules.
How to become a Level 1 Official:

Attend a NZ Level 1 course which is delivered by Tri NZ and facilitated by one of NZ's experienced internationally qualified officials.

Pass the exam with a pass mark of 80% or better.

Shadow an active Tri NZ Official at a Tri NZ Sanctioned event.
NZ Level 2
A NZ Level 2 Official will have full working knowledge of the Tri NZ Competition Rules, a basic knowledge of NZ Drug Agency rules and application, road code, field of play design, how to deal with protests and appeals, an overview of Health and Safety Plans applicable to events and how they are applied and monitored. A NZ level 2 Official will also have basic knowledge of the ITU Competition Rules.
How to become a Level 2 Official:

Officiate at Tri NZ Sanctioned and Endorsed events for a minimum of 1 year as at NZ Level 1 before moving to Level 2.

Officiate in every role (except Race Referee and Technical Delegate roles) eg; Transition, Mount/Dismount, Swim, Cycle, Run, Finish.

Experience officiating at other multisport events (eg; Aquathlon, Duathlon, Winter Triathlon).
International Technical Official (ITO)
Once NZ Level 2 has been reached, and the officials have been at that level for a minimum of 1 year officials can apply to have training as an ITO. Officials who are eligible to progress to ITO will be selected by the ITU. The ITO courses and officiating programme are run by the ITU and facilitated by ITU Accredited Facilitators to ensure education and courses are consistent across the globe.
