Triathlon New Zealand High Performance HP squad selection policy
Letter of intent
Tri NZ would like to inform you of the progressions that are taking place within Triathlon New Zealand's (Tri NZ) High Performance programme in regards to selection criteria, and how we support selected athletes.
Triathlon, as with most Olympic sports, is evolving fast. Over the past three years New Zealand has maintained its place as one of the top nations in triathlon - our aim is to be the leader.
To maintain and improve our ranking in the sport on an international level, Tri NZ needs to recognise shifts in performance within its selection criteria and organisational support structure. Therefore, from a philosophical perspective it is crucial we continue to take a dynamic and fluid approach to selection criteria, Olympic pathways and High Performance planning documents. This will promote and encourage a higher level of performance, which will in turn result in Kiwi athletes performing with distinction at pinnacle events.
You may be aware that a High Performance review is currently underway to assess whether we are supporting our athletes appropriately in development towards success at pinnacle events. This is the first step in our dedication to ensuring we are maximising available resources in developing New Zealand triathletes.
Our second step is to evolve our selection policies.
Over the past three years our selection policies have remained static, and we have seen growth in the High Performance squads as athletes have strived to reach these goals. It is fantastic to see athletes reaching higher levels of performance than what had been set in the previous Olympic cycle. However, these levels of performance are no longer tracking towards world class performances at the international elite level. Tri NZ sees it necessary to reassess the criteria for selection into the High Performance squads, and also World Triathlon Series events.
Recently, the Tri NZ High Performance team released revised squad selection criteria which will be actioned in April. This is stage one in aligning our selection policies with performances that are tracking towards distinction at pinnacle events. It also ensures that we are investing in talent - effectively quality over quantity. Criteria will be further progressed for our next selection dates and these will be released in due course.

Please note the age restrictions and that this trip is self funded, we hope that like last time we will be able to reimburse some costs.
2012 ELITE AQUATHON SELECTION POLICY
The elite aquathon selection policy is finalised in the selection and carding section
Please note that the announcement of team date is not until 37 days out from the race and the appeal date is 4 days from the announcement date and MUST be sent in via email. The reason for this is the tight deadlines from the International Triathlon Union regarding entries.
2012 WELLINGTON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – CONTACT CUP (Elite/U23/U19)
You may or may not be aware that the Oceania Championships are being help in Devonport, Australia in 2012. The Oceania Triathlon Union's (OTU) mandate is to rotate it each year between NZ and Australia.
In 2012 Triathlon Australia (TA) awarded the event to Devonport. Tri NZ and TA discussed the need to ensure that there wasn't a clash with the Contact Cup in Wellington. Unfortunately, this transpired to be unsuccessful due to Tasmanian State government contracts with the event promoter.
Initial thoughts were that the number of athletes that would travel to Devonport to race would not dramatically affect the Contact Cup field for Wellington. However, what has recently emerged is that it is now a selection race for U23 and U19 athletes as well as an ITU Points race in Olympic year for elite. Consequently it has dramatically affected the number of athletes who will race in Wellington and therefore the viability of the race.
Therefore, and with regret, we have decided to remove the Contact Cup from the Wellington programme for 2012. In addition, the decision has been made to award the National Championship Elite Open, U23 and U19 titles on the Devonport races.
All other events at Wellington remain the same with an additional feature race; the ‘Team Triathlon. This is a new form of racing whereby teams of four will each swim bike and run through a short course, tagging their team mate at the end. If you feel that neither, the Age Group race or the team's event satisfies you, we will happily provide you with a full refund immediately.
Please contact Tri NZ Event Director Haidee Stratford (cc'd) to communicate which race, if any, you intend to now participate in so this change can be made. We also ask you to please contact us with any questions or concerns.
We apologise for this unfortunate but unavoidable situation.
Yours faithfully,
CRAIG WAUGH
CHIEF EXECUTIVE
