New Zealand athletes have won 11 medals at the ITU Aquathlon World Championships in Beijing, China.

The Aquathlon event was a lead-in to this weekend's ITU Triathlon World Championships Grand Final on the same course and consisted of a 2.5km run, 1km swim and 2.5km run.

In total 28 Kiwis took to the start line in hazy conditions, with temperatures around the early/mid 20 degrees mark.

The New Zealanders were some of several hundred athletes who took to the Olympic course, all contesting Elite, U23, Junior and Age Group titles.

Of New Zealand's 11 medals won, four were gold, one silver and six bronze.

Hamish Hammond and Rebecca Clarke both won gold in the 20-24 age group while Tanya Dromgool (25-29) and Tiare Lund (65-69) were also on top of the podium.

"It's an incredible feeling " said Clarke "one of my best race finishes ever. It's special going across that finish line banner especially over the Olympic course. And going 1-2 with Tanya for New Zealand is wonderful. All this gives me great confidence for Sunday's triathlon."

Winning silver in the women's 60-64 category was Ann Bondy, and the Kiwi bronze medallists were; Hayden Moorhouse (16-19), Emma Rathbone (25-29), Simonne Robbers (35-39), Peter Kane (50-54), Alan Lennon (55-59) and Shirley Rolston (60-64).

Congratulations to all of our Aquathlon athletes on an outstanding effort.
