Frequently Asked Questions
Age Group World Champs

Q. Do I have to be a New Zealand Citizen/Permanent Resident to be selected in a World Champs Team?

A. Yes. To be classified as a New Zealand Citizen/Permanent Resident you need to be able to provide proof of one of the following:

NZ Birth Certificate
NZ Passport
NZ Citizenship Certificate
NZ Permanent Resident Certificate/Visa

Q. Do I have to be a member of Triathlon New Zealand to be selected in a World Champs Team?

A. Yes. It is a requirement of selection to be a member of the National Federation. By joining TRIBE Tri NZ's free membership you will become a member of the National Federation. Note: TRIBE membership is valid 1 November to 31 October - so ensure you renew this membership each year.

Q. Do I need to be a Club member to be selected in a World Champs team?

A. Yes. It is a Tri NZ constitutional requirement for athletes to be a current Affiliated Club member when you compete in the selection event - please click here to view our club section to find your local tri club

Q. I am a New Zealander but live overseas what Club do I join?

A. For New Zealand athletes living overseas permanently you are not required to join a New Zealand club, when completing your Selection Nomination or Special Circumstance form please select ‘Overseas' in the club list.

Q. How to do I qualify for a Age Group World Champs Team?

A. Read the Selection Policy and Criteria that relates to the event you would like to be selected for; if you have any questions about the policy after reading it please contact: claire.attwood@triathlon.org.nz

Q. I have completed a selection nomination form but I am not on the event start list?

A. If your name is not showing on the start list it is more than likely that you have not actually entered the event. A Selection Nomination Form Application is completely separate to entering the nominated selection event. It is the athlete's responsibility to enter the nominated selection event through the event organiser's entry system. If you are unsure if you have completed your entry please contact the event organisers directly.

Q. Can I change distances once I have been selected in the Auckland 2012 Sprint or Olympic team?

A. NO. Once you have gained selection and made your commitment to the NZ Sprint or Olympic Distance team you cannot change your distance by competing at another selection event. E.g. Sprint to Olympic or vice versa. The reasoning behind this is that there is a large demand on selection spots and we want to keep the selection process as fair as possible for all athletes that are trying to achieve selection in their chosen distance.

Q. What is the International Race Licence? What is the money used for?

A. The International Race License is required by athletes who want to confirm their place in a NZ World Champs team and be entered into any ITU event held nationally or internationally.

Due to ITU regulations the National Federation is responsible for all aspects of age group world champs athlete management. This IRL fee enables Tri NZ to provide the entry, administration and management of all Age Group athletes for all ITU World Champ events. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Collecting entry fees, entering athletes and withdrawals
  • Educating athletes on uniform and competition rules
  • Athlete Insurance Compliance
  • Co-ordination of Team Travel arrangements in conjunction with HOT Events
  • Co-ordination of Team Uniforms in conjunction with 2XU
  • Co-ordinating, compiling and issuing communication for the ITU, LOC and athletes
  • Team management expenses (incl. Flights, Accommodation, Food, Transfers, Uniform and other out of pocket expenses whilst travelling with the team)
  • Additional Team Services subject to team size and funds available e.g. physio, bike mechanic

Once an athlete has purchased this license for the season they are able to enter multiple ITU events.

The $195 fee is split approximately as follows:

  • Approximately 80% for your IRL fee goes towards team managers expenses
  • Approximately 20% of your IRL fee goes towards team administration & management

The IRL Fee does not cover any of Tri NZ's basic running costs such as office admin, finance support or Tri NZ's World Champs Manager salary and none of the fee goes towards any other part of Tri NZ's operations. The IRL fee is put straight back into servicing the Age Group World Champ Teams. It should be noted that our goal is to provide the whole team the best experience that we can with the limited funds and resources that we have.

Q. What costs are involved in attending the Age Group World Champs?

A. Unfortunately Tri NZ is not in a position to be able to cover the costs of sending teams to World Champs. We are happy to provide letters of support from the national federation to help support any funding application you might make. Please note we are unable to make funding applications on your behalf.
