AGE GROUP & ELITE WORLD CHAMPS SELECTION POLICY AND CRITERIA

ITU CROSS TRIATHLON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012

16-19 MAY 2012, OAK MOUNTAIN STATE PARK, SHELBY COUNTY,ALABAMA, USA

A. OBJECTIVE

To promote the growth of triathlon and its related disciplines by selecting athletes to represent New Zealand who have demonstrated the ability to finish within the top three quarters of World Championship age-group and elite field.

B. GENERAL INFORMATION

1. Selections will be made by the Age Group Selection Commission and will be subject to ratification by the Triathlon New Zealand (Tri NZ) Board.

2. It is the athlete's responsibility to enter the nominated selection event/s through the event website.

3. All selection nomination forms MUST be received by Triathlon New Zealand (Tri NZ) no later than 5pm, Wednesday 29th February 2012. No Exceptions

4. To be eligible for selection in a Tri NZ National Team, athletes MUST on selection race day:

4.1. Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand

4.2 Be a current member of Tri NZ (TRIBE) and be in good standing with Tri NZ

4.3 Be a current member of a Tri NZ Affiliated Club (List of clubs available at www.triathlon.org.nz)

ITU Constitutional rules apply to naturalized persons and those with dual citizenship. If there is any doubt regarding eligibility to compete for New Zealand please contact the Triathlon New Zealand Office for clarification.

5. The categories for selection are Elite and Age Group.

The age of an athlete for age group is taken as the athletes age on 31 December of the year of the World Championships and are as follows for both male and female: 18-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, older age group competitors will also be considered.

The nominated selection event will use your age as at 31 December 2012 for age group categories for ease of selection.

6. Teams for Cross Triathlon World Champs are self-financed. Athletes who accept selection to a National Cross Triathlon Team will be responsible for funding their own travel, accommodation, race entry, uniform and administrative costs. A breakdown of fees will be provided to athletes by the Tri NZ office at the time of selection announcement. Due to the desire to create a great team culture and to enhance team management selected athletes are encouraged to stay at the nominated team accommodation.

7. It is the responsibility of the athlete to ensure that the selection nomination form and/or special circumstance form has been received by Tri NZ within the set out deadlines.

8. On announcement of the team each athlete is required to provide Tri NZ physical evidence of 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 as of selection race day; to attain a Tri NZ International Race License ($195NZD); and complete an athlete agreement in order to confirm their position in the team. See Section H for Team Announcement information.

C. MAXIMUM NATIONAL TEAM SIZE

The maximum National Team size is determined by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Competition Rules and Tri NZ can select up to:

Elite - 6 males and 6 females per elite category

Age Group - 20 males and 20 females per age group

D. SELECTION COMMISSION

The role of assessing athletes against the selection criteria is the responsibility of the Tri NZ Age Group Selection Commission, which is appointed by the Tri NZ Board.

E. SELECTION CRITERIA

The nominated selection race is:

Xterra Rotorua – Saturday 9th April 2011, 1km Swim – 26km MTB – 11km Run

Elite: You must race in the Pro event. The first 4 eligible athletes in each category to the cross the line will gain automatic selection, as long as their finishing time is within 10% of first place in their respective category.

Age Group: Must race in the age group category event. The first 15 eligible athletes in each age-group to cross the line at the above nominated selection race will gain automatic selection, as long as their finishing time is within 20% of first place in their respective age-group.

The remaining available slots will be determined by selector discretion, taking into account special circumstance applications In certain cases, when allocating discretionary places the selectors may request an athlete to carry out a fitness trial. Selector's discretion is not used for late selection applications.

F. SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCE APPLICATIONS

Athletes who wish to communicate information about performances, health or other relevant circumstances to the selectors must do so in writing on the special circumstances application form, a $50 fee does apply – the online form is available at www.triathlon.org.nz

Special circumstance applications will be open to athletes who entered in the selection event, those who were unable to compete in the selection event, and overseas athletes. Athletes who claim special circumstances will be required to provide race results; these should be the distances/discipline the application is being made for. All race results must show the applicants finishing time within 20% of first place in their respective category of the event (e.g. 35-39 or pro) and be no more than 6 months old. All applications must be completed by 5pm, Wednesday 29th February 2012. No Exceptions.

A Special Circumstance Application does not guarantee selection; selection is subject to selector discretion.

G. ATHLETES BASED OVERSEAS

Tri NZ encourages all athletes based overseas to compete in the nominated selection event as the primary selection method but if circumstances prevent the athlete travelling to New Zealand to attend the selection event they may still be considered for selection by following the below steps.

Athletes based overseas:

· Must be a current member of Tri NZ (TRIBE); and a citizen of New Zealand

· Must complete the Age Group Special Circumstance Form and to back up their selection request provide race results relevant to the distance/discipline the application is being made for. All race results must

show the applicants finishing time within 20% of first place in their respective age-group of the event (e.g. 35-39) and be no more than 6 months old. $50 fee applies – the online form is available at

www.triathlon.org.nz

· Must complete the form online by 5pm, Wednesday 29th February 2012. No Exceptions

· Will be encouraged to stay with the team and must follow other team rules and expectations.

H. TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT

The team announcement will be made by 10th March 2012 including the remaining slots allocated through selector discretion including special circumstance applications.

Team Announcement will be communicated to athletes by email, as well as a posting of the team list on the Tri NZ website www.triathlon.org.nz

I. APPEALS

Any aggrieved person may appeal against a decision of the selectors on the grounds that the selection policy was not properly followed or implemented.

Any appeal against a decision of the selectors must be lodged within 7 days of any public announcement of the selections with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tri NZ and accompanied by the prescribed fee of $100 GST inclusive.

The application for appeal must set out:

1. The decision of the selectors in which you believe the selection policy was not followed or implemented;

2. The grounds upon which the appeal is made; and

3. The reasons or circumstances supporting the alleged grounds of appeal.
