How to Qualify for a Age Group World Champs Team

  • Read the relevant Selection Policy and Criteria
  • As per the Selection Policy and Criteria:
  • Enter and compete in a Triathlon New Zealand nominated selection event
  • Complete the Triathlon New Zealand World Championship Selection Nomination Online Form 
  • On the day of the selection event:
      1. Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand
      2. Be a current member of Tri NZ (TRIBE) and be in good standing with Tri NZ
      3. Be a current member of a Tri NZ Affiliated Club

        Note: ITU Constitutional rules apply to naturalized persons and those with dual citizenship. An athlete can not hold a membership with more than one National Federation at a time. If there is any doubt regarding eligibility to compete for New Zealand please contact the Triathlon New Zealand Office for clarification. This is taken very seriously by the ITU and if not adhered to can lead to suspension not only for the athlete but the national federation as well.
  • Be in the first ‘X ‘eligible athletes in your age-group to cross the line at the nominated selection race to gain automatic selection, as long as your time is within 20% of first place in your respective age-group. See specific event selection policy and criteria for more detail.
  • On announcement of the selected team you are required to provide Tri NZ evidence of the following as of the selection race day and also attain a Tri NZ International Race License to confirm your place in the team.

    1. Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand
    2. Be a current member of Tri NZ (TRIBE) and be in good standing with Tri NZ
    3. Be a current member of a Tri NZ Affiliated Club (See Club List)

Note: Age Group World Champs athletes need to purchase an Amateur Level International Race License once they have been notified of their selection in order to confirm their spot on the team.

Special Circumstance Applications:

  • Read the relevant Selection Policy and Criteria
  • Special circumstance applications are open to athletes who have entered the nominated selection event and athletes based overseas and fall into the following categories:
    1. Medical condition that prevents athlete from starting or finishing or hinders your final result in the selection event
    2. Mechanical problem that prevents you from finishing or hinders your final result in the selection event
    3. NZ athletes living overseas

  • Athletes who claim special circumstances will be required to provide race results; these must be the distances/discipline the application is being made for. All race results must show the applicants finishing within 20% of first place in their respective age-group (e.g. 35-39) of the event results and be no more than 6 months old. All applications must be completed online. No exceptions

  • A Special Circumstance Application does not guarantee selection; selection is subject to selector discretion.

  • Each Special Circumstance Application will be reviewed by the Triathlon New Zealand Age Group Selectors and selection is by selectors discretion.

  • A $50 non-refundable application fee applies per application

  • To apply by Special Circumstance Application please complete the online form no later than two days after the selection event

  • On announcement of the team you are required to provide Tri NZ evidence of the following as of the selection race day and also attain a Tri NZ International Race License to be able to confirm your position in the team.

    1. Citizenship or permanent residency of New Zealand
    2. Current membership of Tri NZ (TRIBE) and be in good standing with Tri NZ
    3. Current membership of a Tri NZ Affiliated Club
