Overview

Keys things to know if you are staring out in Triathlon, Duathlon or Multisport

Triathlon has 4 key distances or events:

  1. Sprint Distance 750m Swim, 20km Bike, 5km Run
  2. Standard/ Olympic Distance 1500m Swim, 40km Bike, 10km Run
  3. ½ Ironman 2km(ish) Swim, 90km Bike, 21km Run
  4. Ironman 3.8km Swim, 180km Bike, 42km Run
  5. If you are starting out you may race a super sprint event which could be anything
    from a 50m – 300m swim, 4km – 16km bike and 1km – 3km run.

Duathlon has 3 key distances:

  1. Sprint Distance 5km Run, 20km Bike, 2.5km Run
  2. Standard Distance 10km, 40km, 5km
  3. Long Distance 10 or longer, 60 or longer, 10 or longer

Multisport by definition is a mixture of many sports and distances and typically vary as to which
sports are involved.  Races can last between 30minutes for a beginners event up to 7 days or more in an
Adventure Multisport event.

Here is a list of sports which you may find in a Multisport race:

  • Kayaking
  • On and off road running 
  • Cycling 
  • Mountain biking
  • Hiking
  • Abseiling
  • Caving
  • Rock climbing 
  • Inline skating
  • Skating
  • And many others.
