All Age Group World Champs Selection Policies and Forms for 2011 are currently under review; and will be published by 1st October 2010
Below is the 2010 Age Group World Champs Selection Policy
A. OBJECTIVE
To promote the growth of triathlon and its related disciplines by selecting athletes who have demonstrated the ability to finish within the top three quarters of World Championship age-group field.
B. GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Selections will be made by the age-group selection commission and will be subject to ratification by the executive board of Triathlon New Zealand
2. All selection nomination forms MUST be received by Triathlon New Zealand no later than 2 working days after the primary selection race. No exceptions. All special circumstance forms MUST be received by Triathlon NZ no later than 2 working days after the finish of the primary selection race. No exceptions
3. To be eligible for selection to a Tri NZ National Age Group Team, athletes must:
3.1. Be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand
3.2 Be a financial member of Triathlon New Zealand and be in good standing with Triathlon New Zealand
3.3 Be a financial member of a Triathlon New Zealand Affiliated Club
4. The age of an athlete for age group teams is taken as the age on the 31st of December of the year of the World Championships and are as follows for both Male and Female: 16-17(Sprint Only), 18-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, older age group competitors will also be considered.
5. Age-Group Teams are self-financed. Athletes who accept selection to a National Age-Group Team will be responsible for funding their own travel, accommodation, race entry, uniform and administrative costs. A breakdown of fees will be provided to athletes by the Tri NZ office at the time of selection announcement. Due to the need to create a great team culture and for ease of team management selected athletes will be required to stay at the nominated team accommodation for at least 3 nights leading up to this race. We may provide two options to accommodate different budgets.
6. Athletes who wish to communicate information about performances, health or other relevant circumstances to the selectors must do so in writing on the special circumstances exemption form – available on the Tri NZ web site, or by request from the Tri NZ office, athletes who claim special circumstances will be required to provide race results (no older than 6 months) that backup their claim for selection. The special circumstances exemption form must be returned to the Tri NZ office within 2 working days of the relevant selection race.
7. It is the responsibility of the athlete to ensure that selection nomination forms and/or special circumstance forms have been received by Tri NZ within the set out deadlines.
C. SELECTION DATE
If practicable, Tri NZ will announce a provisional National Age Group Team within 30 days of the Final Selection race. The provisional team will be posted on the Tri NZ web site, but official confirmation will be confirmed in writing to each individual team member.
D. MAXIMUM NATIONAL AGE GROUP TEAM SIZE
The maximum National Age Group Team size is determined by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Competition Rules (currently 20 M/W per age group).
E. SELECTION CRITERIA
Tri NZ National Age group teams are selected to attend the following events:
· Triathlon Standard Course World Championships
· Triathlon Long Course World Championships
· Sprint Course World Championships
· Duathlon Standard Course World Championships
· Duathlon Long Course World Championships
· Winter Triathlon World Championships
2010 Triathlon Standard Course World Championships
Athletes cannot be selected for both the World Champs Sprint Triathlon team and World Champs Standard Course Triathlon team for the same year. This is in accordance with ITU rules.
The primary selection race will be the National Standard Distance Triathlon Championships (Contact Trophy Race), on 13 March. The first twelve eligible athletes in each age-group to cross the line at this nominated selection race will gain automatic selection, as long as they are within 20% of first place in their respective age-group.
The remaining available slots will be determined by selector discretion. Special circumstance forms will also be accepted for those unable to attend NZ events, with relevant overseas results, subject to selector’s discretion.
Priority will be given to those who have raced at the Standard Distance Triathlon Championships, then those with overseas applications.
In certain cases when allocating discretionary places the selectors may request an athlete to carry out a proof of fitness trial.
All selection nomination forms MUST be received by Triathlon New Zealand no later than 2 working days after the primary selection race. No exceptions. All special circumstance forms MUST be received by Triathlon NZ no later than 2 working days after the finish of the primary selection race. No exceptions
2010 Sprint Course World Championships
Athletes cannot be selected for both the World Champs Sprint Triathlon team and World Champs Standard Course Triathlon team for the same year. This is in accordance with ITU rules.
The primary selection race will be the National Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships (Contact Trophy Race), on 7 February. The first twelve eligible athletes in each age-group to cross the line at this nominated selection race will gain automatic selection, as long as they are within 20% of first place in their respective age-group.
The remaining available slots will be determined by selector discretion. Special circumstance forms will also be accepted for those unable to attend NZ events, with relevant overseas results, subject to selector’s discretion.
Priority will be given to those who have raced at the nominated selection race then to those with overseas applications.
In certain cases when allocating discretionary places the selectors may request an athlete to carry out a proof of fitness trial.

2010 Triathlon Long Course World Championships
The primary selection race will be the National Long Distance Triathlon Championships, which for the 2009/2010 season will be the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman 2010. The first six eligible athletes in each age-group to cross the line at this nominated selection race will gain automatic selection, as long as they are within 20% of first place in their respective age-group.
For the remaining slots, selection applications will also be accepted from other Tri NZ Sanctioned Half Ironman events in New Zealand (Taupo Half Ironman, South Island Half Ironman and Challenge Wanaka), subject to selector’s discretion. Special circumstance forms will also be accepted for those unable to attend these events, with relevant results, subject to selector’s discretion.
Priority will be given to those who have raced at the National Long Distance Triathlon Championships, then to those who have raced the sanctioned events in New Zealand and then those with special circumstances.
In certain cases when allocating discretionary places the selectors may request an athlete to carry out a proof of fitness trial.
All selection nomination forms MUST be received by Triathlon New Zealand no later than 2 working days after the primary selection race. No exceptions. All special circumstance forms MUST be received by Triathlon NZ no later than 2 working days after the finish of the primary selection race. No exceptions
Port of Tauranga Half Ironman Entrants – if you wish to be selected for World Champs please ensure on your POT entry you have ‘Yes’ for World Champs Selection. It is your responsibility to check this on the POT website and at registration prior to the race. If you need to update your entry details you can do this by contacting the race organiser. If you have ‘Yes’ then there is no need to fill in a Selection Nomination Form.
2010 Duathlon Standard Course World Championships
The primary selection race will be the Race 1 Contact Duathlon Series Fielding (Standard Distance Event). The first twelve eligible athletes in each age-group to cross the line at this nominated selection race will gain automatic selection, as long as they are within 20% of first place in their respective age-group.
The remaining available slots will be determined by selector discretion. Special circumstance forms will also be accepted for those unable to attend NZ events, with relevant overseas results, subject to selector’s discretion.
In certain cases when allocating discretionary places the selectors may request an athlete to carry out a proof of fitness trial.
All selection nomination forms MUST be received by Triathlon New Zealand no later than 2 working days after the primary selection race. No exceptions. All special circumstance forms MUST be received by Triathlon NZ no later than 2 working days after the finish of the primary selection race. No exceptions
2010 Winter Triathlon World Championships
The first twelve eligible athletes in each age-group to cross the line at the nominated selection race (TBC) will gain automatic selection, as long as they are within 20% of first place in their respective age-group.
The remaining available slots will be determined by selector discretion. Special circumstance forms will also be accepted for those unable to attend NZ events, with relevant overseas results, subject to selector’s discretion.
In certain cases when allocating discretionary places the selectors may request an athlete to carry out a proof of fitness trial.
All selection nomination forms MUST be received by Triathlon New Zealand no later than 2 working days after the primary selection race. No exceptions. All special circumstance forms MUST be received by Triathlon NZ no later than 2 working days after the finish of the primary selection race. No exceptions
If there is no selection race, selection will be based on other standard course triathlon results within the previous six months, it is the athlete’s responsibility to provide these results to back up their request for selection.
F. SELECTION COMMISSION
The role of assessing athletes against the selection criteria is the responsibility of the Tri NZ Age Group Selection Commission, which is appointed by the board of Tri NZ.
G. APPEALS
Any aggrieved person may appeal against a decision of the selectors on the grounds that the selection policy was not properly followed or implemented.
Any appeal against a decision of the selectors must be lodged within Fourteen (14) days of any public announcement of the selections with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tri NZ and accompanied by the prescribed fee of $50. The application for appeal must set out:
1. The decision of the selectors in question;
2. The grounds upon which the appeal is made; and
3. The reasons or circumstances supporting the alleged grounds of appeal.
A full description of the appeal process, the constitution of a Selection Appeal Panel, and its functions and role is available on request from the Tri NZ head office.
H. Athletes based overseas:
Age group athletes based overseas who are not able to attend the selection events may still be considered for selection. The following steps must be followed:
· They must be a financial member of Tri NZ
· They must contact the convenor of selection prior to the relevant selection race to express their desire to be considered for selection and to negotiate what overseas event may be used as a substitute selection race.
· They must complete the Age Group Special Circumstances Form and provide relevant race results no more than 6 months old to back up their selection request.
· They must arrange for the formal submission of results of that event from the race organiser to the convenor of selection.
· All special circumstance forms MUST be received by Triathlon NZ no later than 2 working days after the finish of the primary selection race. No exceptions.
· Despite being overseas, they will still be expected to room with the team and follow other team rules and expectations.
