Kris Gemmell

Palmerston North’s favourite Triathlon prodigy is one of the more interesting characters on the world scene. Known for his aggressive race tactics and at times outspoken nature, Gemmell does everything with attitude and more often than not a smile.

Gemmell missed selection for the Athens Olympic Games and found himself in the commentary box with Brendan Telfer as Hamish Carter and his good mate Bevan Docherty won gold and silver.

Gemmell was ready to atone for that in Beijing when in the form of his life he put his foot through a competitors wheel in his final race two weeks before the games. The resulting stitches and recovery ruined any chance of a medal. Gemmell though is consistently a threat in the big races, finishing 2009 as the number 6 ranked triathlete in the world.
